Divergent attitudes to hands on medical treatments have existed for many years. Puritanism and faith in scientific methods have combined to downplay hand treatments in the West although it has been popular in the East for many centuries. In recent times western medicine has somewhat grudgingly acknowledged the benefits of treatments like acupuncture, chiropractic and massage but they have traditionally be dismissed scornfully as ‘alternative’ medicine, not being sufficiently scientific.
