“Diagnosing and Understanding Vocal Cord Dysfunction”
Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a very real and very destructive problem in our society. It affects an average of seventy two million people in America alone.
When you are attempting to break a nicotine habit it is important that you understand how you are going to be persistent. You should make sure that you take the time that you need to be sure that you are able to kick the habit successfully.
It often mimics persistent asthma, and is often treated with high-dose inhaled or systemic corticosteroids, bronchodilators, multiple emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and, in some cases, tracheostomies, and intubation. It can be quite painful, and very irritating.
First, you want to make sure that you write out your reasons for quitting. Although you may know that nicotine is not good for your body you should be sure that you write out exactly why you are going to stop.
Make quitting a personal matter. Make sure that you understand how you are going to make this process important and personal so that you can continually reference these reasons when things are getting hard.
Second, you should make sure that you understand that you may have more reasons to quit than just your health. When you have children around you often you may quit because you do not want to adversely affect their health.
You can also try to eat less red meat, and more fish and poultry. A high fiber diet could be effective in preventing and treating many forms of cardiovascular disease, including hypertension.
In some cases, supplements can also help. Magnesium levels are shown to be consistently low in people suffering from this problem. Potassium and calcium levels are often low as well. Diet alone may not be enough to reach the levels needed.
During the normal cycle of breath, the vocal cords partially abducts with inhalation, and partially adducts with end-exhalation. This vocal cord movement is physiologic, and it allows the unimpeded movement of air inward to the lungs, and outward to the atmosphere while maintaining the alveolar patency of the lungs by providing positive airway pressure during exhalation.
In this way, the larynx serves as an upper airway valve to help keep the lungs expanded. For this function, the larynx is richly innervated, and its size is regulated by the activation of striated muscles that are under voluntary and reflexive control.
Both laryngeal and respiratory motor neurons influence its size, and they, in turn, may be influenced by reflex activity arising from pulmonary and laryngeal receptors. The mechanisms that cause glottic chink narrowing or intermittent closing during inspiration, independent of any changes in lower airway caliber, are still unknown as of this point.
Try your hardest to not be judgmental towards those that are going to continue taking in nicotine. Make sure that you understand that this is a personal choice and you cannot force anyone to quit a habit with you.
This being said, if you have a friend that wants to quit you may be able to create a support group that is very beneficial. Taking the time to talk about the struggles that you are experiencing and how you overcome them may help both of you.
A recent study evaluating the role of formal psychological testing in patients with paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction, found a pattern consistent with conversion disorder in some patients. However, a subset of patients did not appear to be associated with psychological factors at all.
The exact cause of this condition is not clearly evident, and may be the result of a number of factors, some controllable, some not. One possibility is that mediation of the vagus nerve may alter the laryngeal tone, and lower the threshold for stimuli to produce vocal cord spasm or to precipitate the abnormal adduction of vocal cords.
Recent literature suggests a greater emphasis on organic causes such as gastroesophageal reflux and laryngopharyngeal reflux, since the laryngopharynx is highly sensitive to gastric acid irritation.
If you feel you may be suffering from high blood pressure, talk to your doctor right away about what you can actively do to stop the problem from becoming more severe. Try introducing watermelon into your diet right away!
