Magnetic resonance imaging is a sophisticated diagnostic test. An MRI machine can take detailed pictures of the internal structures of the human body. Such scans are slightly similar to ultrasounds, or computed tomography, also referred to as a CAT scan, but the image created offers greater detail. Magnetic resonance imaging is not an invasive procedure and is regarded as safe. For this reason, it is perfect for patients who have an aversion to uncomfortable procedures and invasive tests. Strong magnets and radio waves are used while the test is underway, and these ensure the pictures’ quality. When the images are evaluated, a radiologist or other medical professional will be able to discover what kind of condition or disease from which the individual may be suffering. The findings are then sent to the patient’s family doctor who can recommend the most suitable treatment.

One aspect associated with MRI technology that is considered highly beneficial is its ability to discover numerous medical disorders that cannot be uncovered by other types of radiography. For instance, specific types of tumors cannot be identified through the use of ultrasound scans, x-rays or computed tomography, but will be clearly defined when magnetic resonance imaging is performed.

Claustrophobic patients or those who feel ill in confined spaces may resist such a test. However, in the late 1990s an alternative was developed for such individuals. This is called an open MRI. In most instances, health insurance covers this alternative for claustrophobic individuals.

There are certain individuals for which this test is not suitable. These include patients with medical implants such as pacemakers. This is because any type of metal in or on one’s body can interfere with the scanning procedure and skew the results. Such scans are contraindicated for pregnant women as well.
