Think and Grow Rich Chapter 1 – Introduction
Think and Grow Rich Chapter 1 – Introduction
“Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to QUIT. That is exactly what the majority of men do. More than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known, told the author their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them.” ~ Napoleon Hill
The takeaway from this chapter is pretty straightforward. If you have a worthwhile purpose that you are working toward, don’t quit. I believe it was Les Brown who said that the obstacles that you face in pursuit of your goals are not there to stop you, but only to challenge you. It is a known fact that most people have little or no appreciation for things they don’t have to work for. Sure we would all like to live easier lives, to not have to endure a lot of the difficulties we do. Jim Rohn says that we don’t need less challenges though, we need more wisdom to deal with those challenges. He says we shouldn’t wish things were easier, we should wish we were better.
What satisfaction is there in doing or achieving something that EVERYONE else can easily do? What could you possibly learn from such an experience? Let’s face it, if success was easy, then everyone would be successful. We wouldn’t need the 30 day mental cleanse, we wouldn’t need to acquire knowledge or work on personal development. As Hill stated in the featured quote above, the easiest thing to do is to quit. Darren Hardy once asked the question, “What is the difference between successful and unsuccessful people? They both hate to do what it takes to become successful, the successful people just do it anyway.”
The one thing that Barnes, the ‘little colored girl, R.U. Darby, and Henry Ford all had in common was a made up mind. They decided what they wanted and refused to take no for an answer. In some cases it took longer than a year to get the desired result, but each persisted until they got what they wanted. It did not matter that some said it was impossible, or that the person they were asking for it said no. They acted like it was impossible to fail.
You hear of so many seemingly overnight successes in this and in other industries, but you almost never hear of all of the hard work, the beating on ones craft that goes on before. You don’t get to see all of the practice that a good musician or band has to do before entering the studio or hitting the stage. Pretty much any worthwhile career takes years of education and training to prepare for. When you listen to Michael Dlouhy’s introduction on the 30 Day Mental Cleanse calls, you hear 35 years network marketing experience, the last 25 with full-time income. That means that it took Michael 10 years to figure this thing out. I’ve seen so many people come into this industry, give it a whole two weeks and say it doesn’t work and quit. Some never do anything beyond purchasing the kit!
What is it that you want? What are you willing to do to get it? What are you willing to endure? Will you let a few ‘no’s stop you? Would you go about it any differently or with any more urgency if you knew that you could not fail? I have heard success defined as the progressive realization of a worthy idea. That the successful person is one who is actively pursuing a worthy goal. That as long as you are progressing towards that goal you are indeed successful. In other words, success is a process, not a destination. The only way to fail is to quit! You might have to change strategy, or make adjustments along the way, but as long you persist and do not give up, do not quit, you can reach your goals and become part of 3 percent who defy the odds and make it despite all of the obstacles and road blocks that life throws in your way. You can do it if you make up your mind to…and again, don’t quit.
