Persistence – Step 8 Towards Riches
“Without persistence, you will be defeated before you start. With persistence you will win.”
“Riches do not respond to wishes. They respond only to definite plans, backed by definite desires, through constant persistence.”
~ Napoleon Hill, ‘Think and Grow Rich’, Chapter 9
This is one of the most important chapters in the book to me, because it addresses what I think to be my greatest weakness, the will to persist, to as Hill puts it, to “fight on in the face of discouragement”. Nothing takes the wind out of my sails quicker than a few well placed ‘NO’s or someone suggesting what I do is a scam or suggesting that it won’t work. Yes, I still believe in what I do and believe that I will succeed, but the phone gains an extra 100 pounds after that. And for some crazy reason I tend to dwell far longer on the failures than I do on the successes.
I believe that Hill was right on target when he said that, “the fear of criticism in such cases is stronger than the desire for success.” This has to be true or the fear of criticism would not stop so many of us dead in our tracks.
A very popular term in our industry is called the ‘Chicken List’. This is the list of people that we consider smarter, sharper, more successful, or more affluent than ourselves. It’s called a Chicken List because WE are Scared to call them because they might think (fill in the blank) about us. Or worse yet, although we believe our opportunity is good enough for us and our families, WE THINK the opportunity is somehow beneath those on the Chicken List. WE THINK they wouldn’t be interested because WE THINK that they are already successful, although in reality we have no idea how they define success. WE might even THINK that they will think we are stupid for pursuing a network marketing opportunity. Notice that the problem isn’t the people on the Chicken List. The problem is what WE THINK!
Thankfully, Hill presents us with the formula for developing the habit of persistence and correcting our thinking. The steps are:
1) A definite purpose back by a burning desire for its fulfillment.
2) A definite plan, expressed in continuous action.
3) A mind closed tightly against all negative and discouraging influences, including negative suggestions of relatives, friends and acquaintances.
4) A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.
This looks like the blueprint for Mentoring for Free and the 30 Day Mental Cleanse to me. We are all here in Mentoring for Free because we have Number 1. The reason that Michael Dlouhy asks for a record of your daily activities is to see if number 2 is being fulfilled. Not only do you need a plan, you need to be executing the plan. Number 3 is all about the 30 day Mental Cleanse; turning off the noise that surrounds us, the radio, newspaper and the Automatic Income Reducer aka the television. But to close our minds against the negative influences of others, we need to do what Michael Dlouhy suggests, and focus on positive emotions when dealing with others. Another way to put it, is to go to our happy place and don’t get sucked into their negativity. This is where we correct our thinking. Number 4 is all about the Mentoring for Free Mastermind Group. I know of nowhere else on the planet where you can get this level of support and encouragement to persist in all 13 of the principles that Napoleon Hill espouses.
Hill says that the entire purpose of the 13 principles espoused in Think and Grown Rich is to enable us to take these steps as a matter of habit. It all works together, but without persistence nothing will work. It all comes down to being ALL IN. Surrender is not an option, quitting is not an option, neither is defeat an option when you are ALL IN. In order to be persistent, you have to be ALL IN. Never surrender. Never quit.
